Sport and PE

The school has recently been reaccredited for the quality of its sports provision through an Active Mark award. Participation in the Sports Co-ordinator programme in Cheltenham has greatly increased the range of sports provision and enabled participation with mainstream schools and in local and regional sporting events for those with disabilities.

All pupils participate in PE to the best of their ability. Activities available include gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming and horse riding. Older pupils engage in outdoor and adventurous activities that are community based. In 2006 the school received an FA Charter Mark following sessions with the Cheltenham Town Football Club coach.

The Sports Co-ordinator programme has allowed Bettridge to develop a very successful model for raising standards in physical education. Specialist coaches in a wide range of sports visit the school and work with pupils alongside Bettridge staff.

Pupils gain accreditation in a variety of award schemes as follows:
  • Swimming awards including Duckling, Puffin, National Curriculum and Water Skills
  • Riding For The Disabled (RDA)
  • Gymnastics Proficiency Awards

The school has good facilities for physical education including a large hall with gymnastic apparatus, swimming pool, soft-play room and outdoor play areas. Secondary pupils also make use of the YMCA in Cheltenham and of the ‘all weather’ pitch at Bournside School.
