Achievement for All

AFA

The project at Bettridge is led by Elinore Smart

Over the past year Bettridge School has been involved in a National initiative to raise achievement for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).  In it's first year the pilot was run across 10 Local Authorities involving approximately 450 schools ranging from primary to secondary and special schools.

There are three strands to the initiative;

  1. Raise achievement and provision for pupils through assessment tracking and intervention
  2. Parental engagement, with school and their child’s learning.
  3. Develop further the provision within schools to extend wider outcomes e.g. Every Child Matters.

In the project's first year pupils in year's 1, 5, 7 and 10 were targeted for intervention.  During the year we tracked their progress in reading, writing and maths (number).  The pupils responded well to the interventions that were put in place and a number of the children made significant progress in the targeted areas.

In the summer term an after school multi-skills club was set up for the year 1 & 2 children, to address strand 3.  All children attended the club and it proved to be a huge success!

We are already part way into the second and final year of the initiative.  We are approaching the project from a slightly different angle this year.  Resources that have been purchased though the initiative have been built into the schemes of work for English and Maths as we feel raising achievement should be seen as an integral part of every child's education.  A Teaching Assistant will work with the children and teachers to support the implementation of these resources and to track progress.  Parental engagement is an essential component of a child's education.  As a school we feel that we already have strong links and relationships with our parents, however we feel that this can be enhanced. The project will focus on working with the parents with children in Early Years; involving them in the setting of Annual Targets and IEP's etc.
As the after school club was such a success last year we hope to organise another club for the spring or summer term with the focus being on the arts.
