Pupils in the Assessment Centre work on the six areas of learning encompassed by the foundation stage.

These are:

  • Language & Literacy,
  • Mathematics,
  • Personal and Social Development,
  • Knowledge & Understanding of the World,
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development.

After initial observations, and in conjunction with parents and other professionals, the staff prepare programmes of activity designed to promote development and maximise each individual’s progress in areas highlighted as in need of extra attention.

If at all possible, parents are encouraged to enrol their child for one or two sessions a week in local pre-school settings to complement their attendance at Bettridge School. Pupils may also attend a local pre-school setting with Bettridge staff if appropriate.

Once they reach the age of 5, pupils have the opportunity to experience all aspects of the National Curriculum but a high priority is given to communication skills and personal development. Strong links are in place for shared sessions with our local primary school. In addition, some children spend one or two sessions a week at their own local school if this is requested by parents. If such an arrangement is put is place then children are accompanied by Bettridge staff.
